The House in the Cerulean Sea: an uplifting, heart-warming cosy fantasy .. TJ Klune

house on the cerulean sea

This is an unabashedly optimistic and well-meaning story. It’ll warm your heart and perhaps even bring tears to your eyes. If you’re in the mood for an all-good-vibes-type of narrative mixed in with creatures of lore, then this is a good book to consider. It’s a happy, uncomplicated story about inclusivity and discarding prejudices, and it’s a quick and easy read.

The cast of characters is vibrant and lovable, making you wish you were a part of their family.

house on the cerulean sea

He will be sent to the orphanage for a month, during which he will send thorough weekly reports. Mr. Werner, a young, handsome member of Extremely Upper Management, warns Linus to “beware” and to leave no detail out of his reports. Some of these children have powers such as telekinesis, and some are from non-human species, many of which we would consider mythological. Linus’s job is to follow up on incident reports and make suggestions regarding the fate of the children and the homes. When Linus's time on the island concludes, Arthur asks Linus to stay with him and the kids, but Linus declines.

Book Excerpt

Inside is a photo of him and Arthur with all the kids, taken that first Saturday at Zoe’s house. On Friday, the day prior to Linus’s departure, the children show up in the morning to invite him to an adventure. The group makes their way back into the jungle, pretending to be fighting off cannibals and snakes.

A Tour Of Los Angeles Through 10 Songs

The book closes with Arthur and Linus about to be married. The House in the Cerulean Sea is a queer fantasy novel by TJ Klune, Lambda Award-winning author of The Extraordinaires and the Green Creek series. The House in the Cerulean Sea was published in March of 2020 and made the USA Today bestseller list. Klune is a queer author whose works often explore supernatural elements. Many mythological species feature in this novel, while other books focus on werewolves, ghosts, and the like.

Genius is the world’s biggest collection of song lyrics and musical knowledge

One day, he's given a secret assignment to assess a special orphanage on the island of Marsyas, run by a man named Arthur Parnassus, who has secrets of his own. Among the six unique children living there, one of them is Lucy, short for Lucifer, who just happens to be the Antichrist. Every day you see reports of entertainers falling prey to the demons within the city walls, and getting ensnared in the promise of fame. If you’re not careful, it can tear you apart but it’s worth it to pursue your passions. As the argument escalates, Linus accuses the DICOMY rules of being prejudicial by segregating off these magical beings. He also says that they should just call them “homes” and not “orphanages” since that’s what they are.

"Sunset People" by Donna Summer

In the closet, there’s a desk with an Underwood typewriter, and Sal explains that he likes to write because it helps him to “find order”. Linus suggests putting the desk near the window instead, and he helps Sal move it out of the closet. Sal talks about how he’s happy here and he never wants to have to move again, but he’s worried that Linus will make them move. Sal brings up the incident when he bit someone who hit him and she became a shapeshifter, too, and he promises it will never happen again. In Linus’s second report, he writes about how Zoe helps to care for the kids. He says that so far, Lucy seems like a mischievous boy who mostly says or does things for “shock value” without real malicious intent.

He was eventually released when the DICOMY came to investigate months later. As an adult, Arthur requested to be put in charge of the orphanage because he wanted to turn it into a place where kids could truly get help. The required that he not tell anyone about being a Phoenix.

When Linus refers to Lucy as the “antichrist”, Arthur rebukes him sharply, explaining that using that word isn’t permitted here. With regards to Chauncey, no one really knows what exactly he is. Chauncey spent his whole life prior to coming here believing that he was meant to be a monster, scaring people by hiding under beds and whatnot.

The island he’s headed to is a ferry-ride away from Marsyas. Riding on the train, he sees the cerulean waters of the ocean for the first time, marveling at its beauty and expansiveness. That night, instead of thinking about how he’s 40, lonely and could afford to lose a few pounds, Linus reads the Rules and Regulations for his workplace to prep for tomorrow’s meeting. Among the kids there, there’s also a witch, a siren and a selkie. After the getting the information he needs to file his report, Linus leaves. Once I got acquainted with the characters, their situation, and Linus Baker's mission, the book took a bit of a leisurely pace.

They end up in the garden where he discovers a cellar door with a rusted padlock. That day is also the second Saturday of the month, which is when Zoe and Arthur traditionally take the kids on an adventure. Zoe drops off a safari-type outfit for Linus which he reluctantly dons, feeling ridiculous. With them all dressed up like a troupe of explorers, they all head off for the woods. Linus is upset at the idea that the village people are harassing the people on the island.

I don't read fantasy novels often, usually finding it too challenging to keep track of magic rules, fantastical species, and complicated worlds. But when TJ Klune's "The House in the Cerulean Sea" was first published in 2020, I seemed to be seeing the book everywhere and couldn't resist picking it up for myself. He would do anything to keep the children safe, even if it means the world will burn.

Chauncey is an amorphous blog with tentacles, basically a monster. And Sal is a shapeshifter who can become a small Pomeranian, with the special ability of being able to give others shapeshifting abilities by biting them. He has been in many orphanages and was abused previously. As Linus Baker reaches the house in the Cerulean Sea, he meets the magical children who call it home.

It’s definitely worth flying into at least once if you’re ever in these parts. A reporter later asks Linus if he was the rumored whistleblower. It results in him telling her his full story, which she intends to publish. It’s also implied that Arthur soon intends to testify to the government about his experiences as a ward of the DICOMY. He goes to sleep, and the next day he awakes to do his laundry. As the opens his suitcase, he sees that laying on top is a brown envelope.

The master of the orphanage then was cruel and abusive to them, so young Arthur wrote to the DICOMY for help, but the master intercepted it and locked him in the cellar. Six months later, he was finally released when the orphanage was shut down. The DICOMY later put him in charge of the orphanage when they reopened it out of some combination of guilt and wanting to keep him quiet about what had happened to him. Afterwards, Linus heads to the post office where a letter from Mr. Werner is waiting.

As the two men chat, Linus brings up his idea of taking the kids on an outing away from the island. For his investigation, Linus has been talking to all of the kids and asking if they are happy there, which is standard in his visits to orphanages here. Linus also recognizes that he’s developing highly unprofessional feelings for Arthur, which is not acceptable since Arthur is one of the subjects of his investigation. When Linus starts talking about possible violations of the Rules and Regulations, Arthur dismisses his concerns. Arthur points out that it’s inherently misguided how the rules were written by humans and that no magical beings had a say regarding rules that are supposedly aimed at the well-being of magical creatures. When Linus says that the rules are meant to help them assimilate, Arthur question why they need to assimilate at all.

This policy would also allow states to take into account the unique experiences that small home care providers and providers in rural areas face while ensuring their employees receive their fair share of Medicaid payments and continued training as well as the delivery of quality care. Higher wages will likely reduce turnover, leading to higher quality of care for older adults and people with disabilities across the nation, as studies have shown. States will also be required to be more transparent in how much they pay for home care services and how they set those rates, increasing the accountability for home care providers. Finally, states will have to create a home care rate-setting advisory group made up of beneficiaries, home care workers and other key stakeholders to advise and consult on provider payment rates and direct compensation for direct care workers.

Ariana Grande's 'Boyfriend' With Social House Is Here: Listen

It takes a 360° strategy to map global audiences, identify consumers, and authentically break through cultural dialogue. While sporting events, entertainment and fine dining abound, Downtown Los Angeles hasn’t lost its hip factor. Residents and frequent visitors are in the know…tourists and newcomers arrive with the distinct impression that they’ve just been let in on So Cal’s coolest secret. Over the past decade, the pulsating core of the city of Los Angeles has undergone a cultural rebirth that has taken it from its concrete jungle, business center roots to a vibrant, multi-district, must-see spot. Los Angeles-based duo Social House are quickly making a name for themselves thanks to Ariana Grande's "Boyfriend." Here are five things to know about them. City Market Social House boasts 20,000 square feet of newly renovated, fully permitted, contemporary private event space, in a historic warehouse setting.

Dog lovers rallied to locate the dog and find it a foster home.

Los Angeles-based duo Social House are quickly making a name for themselves thanks to Ariana Grande‘s “Boyfriend.” Hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Michael “Mikey” Foster and Charles “Scootie” Anderson first joined forces after moving to Los Angeles. The duo then roomed with other creatives in Sherman Oaks, where they named themselves after the house’s WiFi handle. But, Allen of Eurasia Group noted, that would put the nine-month mark in mid- to late January, which could also coincide with the U.S. presidential inauguration. If former President Donald Trump wins in November, he could very well take a different tack with TikTok, the analyst noted. The bill would give TikTok's owner nine months to arrange a sale, with the potential for an additional three-month grace period, according to a copy of the bill released earlier this month. We'll be in touch with the latest information on how President Biden and his administration are working for the American people, as well as ways you can get involved and help our country build back better.

The state Assembly’s Labor and Employment Committee advanced it in an April 17 vote, but lawmakers voiced concerns about how it would function in real-world workplaces. It still needs votes from the full Assembly and Senate before it would go to Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). A California “right to disconnect” proposal aims to protect workers from the growing expectation that they’re always available to their bosses, spurring opposition from business groups that say it would create a compliance mess especially for management of salaried employees.

However, Ives thinks ByteDance would be unlikely to sell TikTok with its core algorithms, the vital software that provides video recommendations to users based on their interests and viewing habits. Meanwhile, TikTok had asked its users to contact their lawmakers to argue against the bill's passage, an effort that failed to sway opinions in Washington, D.C., noted Eurasia Group director Clayton Allen. The passage of the updated version of the bill came after Maria Cantwell, the Senate commerce committee chair, urged the House in March to revise the bill’s details, which now extends TikTok’s parent company ByteDance’s divestment period from six months to a year.

The decision by House Republicans to include TikTok as part of a larger foreign aid package, a priority for President Biden with broad congressional support for Ukraine and Israel, fast-tracked the ban after an earlier version had stalled in the Senate. A standalone bill with a shorter, six-month selling deadline passed the House in March by an overwhelming bipartisan vote as Democrats and Republicans voiced national security concerns about the app’s owner, the Chinese technology firm ByteDance Ltd. The Senate late Tuesday passed a broad legislative package that delivers $95 billion in foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies.

The company has indicated that it would likely go to court to try to block the law if it passes, arguing it would deprive the app’s millions of users of their 1st Amendment rights. "The idea that we would give the Communist Party this much of a propaganda tool, as well as the ability to scrape 170 million Americans' personal data, it is a national security risk," Senator Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, said on CBS' "Face the Nation," on Sunday. The announcement Friday afternoon came as protests escalated at the school’s campus in Los Angeles after school officials canceled an address by the student, Asna Tabassum, following complaints by a pro-Israel group that she had engaged in antisemitism in social media posts. Employment lawyers are increasingly hearing from workers about the blurred boundaries around work hours, Mariko Yoshihara, legislative counsel and policy director for the California Employment Lawyers Association, told lawmakers at the April 17 committee hearing.

Texas’ ban was challenged last year by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, which argued in a lawsuit that the policy was impeding academic freedom because it extended to public universities. Members of both parties, along with intelligence officials, have worried that Chinese authorities could force ByteDance to hand over American user data or direct the company to suppress or boost TikTok content favorable to its interests. TikTok has denied assertions that it could be used as a tool of the Chinese government and has said it has not shared U.S. user data with Chinese authorities.

Meanwhile, TikTok has repeatedly said that it has not and would not share US user data with the Chinese government. “TikTok is an independent platform, with its own leadership team, including a CEO based in Singapore, a COO based in the US and a global head of trust and safety based in Ireland,” the company said. A social media post of a small Bull Terrier mix desperately chasing its owner’s car struck a chord with dog lovers in Long Beach Wednesday. For hourly workers, California law already includes stronger protections than federal statutes, such as overtime pay calculated daily for hours beyond eight per day. For work beyond 12 hours per day, the overtime pay increases to double the worker’s usual hourly rate. The company has good reason to think a legal challenge could be successful, having seen some success in previous legal fights over its operations in the U.S.

It’s also unclear whether a manager or a coworker sending a message after hours would be a violation, or only if the company penalizes workers for not responding to after-hours communications, Groff said. The bill calls for employers and employees to establish what counts as “nonworking hours” by written agreement, but doesn’t set any limits on how they define that term. “As exempt employees, we’re paid a salary for doing our work whenever we need to,” she said.

Critics of the popular social media app argue that ByteDance, which is based in China, could collect user data and censor content that is critical of the Chinese government. In March, Avril Haines, the director of national intelligence, warned in a House intelligence committee hearing that China could use TikTok to influence the US’s 2024 presidential elections. The House has passed legislation that would ban TikTok in the United States if the popular social media platform’s China-based owner doesn’t sell its stake within a year, but don’t expect the app to go away any time soon. This rule will not only benefit residents and their families, it will also ensure that workers aren’t stretched too thin by having inadequate staff on site, which is currently a common reason for worker burnout and turnover. Workers who are on the frontlines interacting with residents and understanding their needs will also be given a voice in developing staffing plans for nursing homes. The Biden-Harris Administration also continues to invest in expanding the pipeline of nursing workers and other care workers, who are so essential to our economy, including through funding from the U.S.

House lawmakers on Wednesday approved legislation meant to force ByteDance, the Chinese internet company, to sell its wildly popular social media app TikTok. Barring such a deal, the legislation would, in fact, ban the social media app in the U.S. The House of Representatives voted 360 to 58 on the updated divest-or-ban bill that could lead to the first time ever that the US government has passed a law to shut down an entire social media platform.

In November, a federal judge blocked a Montana law that would ban TikTok use across the state after the company and five content creators who use the platform sued. TikTok has lobbied hard against the legislation, pushing the app’s 170 million U.S. users — many of whom are young — to call Congress and voice opposition. But the ferocity of the pushback angered lawmakers on Capitol Hill, where there is broad concern about Chinese threats to the U.S. and where few members use the platform themselves. "At the stage that the bill is signed, we will move to the courts for a legal challenge," Beckerman, head of public policy for the Americas at TikTok, wrote.

Lawmakers and the White House have expressed concerns that TikTok’s Chinese ownership poses a national security risk because Beijing could use the app to gain access to Americans’ data or run a disinformation campaign. The bill, which would force TikTok’s Chinese parent to sell the popular social media app, faces a difficult path in the Senate. Since mid-March, TikTok has spent $5 million on TV ads opposing the legislation, according to AdImpact, an advertising tracking firm. The ads have included a diverse group of content creators, including a nun, extolling the positive impacts of the platform on their lives and arguing a ban would trample on the 1st Amendment. The company has also encouraged its users to contact Congress, and some lawmakers have received profanity-laced calls. The bill’s quick path through Congress is extraordinary because it targets one company and because Congress has taken a hands-off approach to tech regulation for decades.

"We'll continue to fight, as this legislation is a clear violation of the First Amendment rights" of TikTok users. The US Department of Labor is close to finalizing a rule to expand federal overtime protections, but would still cover a smaller portion of workers than California’s law. Dozens of states and the federal government have put in place TikTok bans on government devices.

Lawmakers had failed to act despite efforts to protect children online, safeguard users’ privacy and make companies more liable for content posted on their platforms, among other measures. TikTok has attracted unwanted scrutiny not only for the addictiveness of its constantly scrolling videos, but also due to its Chinese owner, ByteDance. That has raised concerns among lawmakers and security experts that the Chinese government could tap TikTok's trove of personal data about millions of U.S. users. The bill, which had already been approved in the House, also includes a provision that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the U.S. if the popular platform's Chinese owner doesn't sell its stake within a year. TikTok users could soon find that the popular social media service is either under new ownership or, although it wouldn't happen immediately, outright banned in the U.S. To make sure nursing homes have the time they need to hire necessary staff, the requirements of this rule will be introduced in phases, with longer timeframes for rural communities. That also could mean their employers would set those employees’ working hours as 24 hours a day, seven days a week, she said. US workers traditionally have other legal protections against nonstop work expectations, such as overtime laws that require businesses to pay them one-and-a-half times their regular rate for hours beyond 40 per week. But many office-professional and managerial positions are paid a fixed salary and considered exempt from overtime laws.

In response earlier this week to the House’s then upcoming vote, TikTok wrote a post on social media expressing its displeasure at the bill and the US’s ability to “shutter a platform that contributes $24bn to the US economy, annually”. Legislative staff for the Assembly’s Labor and Employment Committee recommended Haney amend the legislation so that the “right to disconnect” wouldn’t apply at all to salaried professionals who are exempt from minimum wage and overtime laws. The vote was the latest development in a yearslong cold war between the United States and China over who controls valuable technology from computer chips to artificial intelligence.

The proposal to exempt after-hours communications for emergencies is confusing and unclear, Rosenquist said, in terms of the definition of emergency and how that communication would work in practice. Employees also could feel pressure by the nature of their jobs to continue monitoring and responding to after-hours communications, even if the law theoretically says they don’t have to. “If you’re a client-facing industry, this could be a very hard law to jibe with your business,” said Susan E. Groff, attorney with Jackson Lewis P.C. Labor groups TechEquity and the United Food and Commercial Workers back the measure. But several major business groups, including the California Chamber of Commerce and Society for Human Resource Management, oppose it.

Some days, that might mean leaving mid-afternoon to pick up a child from school and then logging into work later that evening to finish up the day’s to-do list.
